The stacked alfalfa line MON-ØØ179-5 x MON-ØØ1Ø1-8 was obtained through the traditional cross breading of each of the parental organisms to produce alfalfa that expresses the EPSPS gene and a caffeoyl CoA 3-O-methyltransferase (CCOMT) suppression cassette. The expression of these genetic elements are expected to confer tolerance to the glyphosate herbicide and reduced levels of guaiacyl lignin, respectively.

KK179 was developed to have reduced levels of guaiacyl lignin (G). This reduction in G lignin leads to reduced accumulation of total lignin in alfalfa through the suppression of caffeoyl CoA 3-O-methyltransferase (CCOMT), a key enzyme in the lignin biosynthetic pathway through RNAi gene suppression.
The PV-MSPQ12633 vector also contains a transformation cassette expressing the nptII.

J101 contains the epsps gene from Agrobacterium tumefaciens strain CP4 to allow for the use of glyphosate, the active ingredient in the herbicide Roundup®, as a weed control option.
